Liquid Trees: The future of air purification.

Liquid 3, also known as liquid tree, is an urban photobioreactor created by the Multidisciplinary Research Institute of the University of Belgrade to combat air pollution, because in 2019, Serbia was situated as the 5th most polluted country of Europe.

The project consists of the use of containers that contain six hundred liters of water and microalgae, in order to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis.

Dr. Ivan Spasojevic commented that microalgae from one of the Liquid 3 could replace two 10 year old trees or two hundred square meters of lawn since these containers are 10 to 50 times more efficient than regular trees.

The objective of this project is to implement liquid trees in places with high levels of pollution and no space for planting regular trees, and also being operative throughout the year.

Liquid 3 has also built-in a system of solar panels on the top of the container, and is integrated with a nightlight that illuminates the inside, generating a relaxing environment. It is also integrated with USB ports and a bench so people can rest, therefore, Liquid 3 is an ideal project to save space and improve air quality in urban areas.
