The European Union has agreed to ban imports of products that contribute to deforestation.

Between 1990 and 2020, more than the EU area was lost to global deforestation. And part of the blame lies with European consumption levels, which are responsible for around 10% of deforestation worldwide.

The European Union (EU) sealed an agreement between the governments that comprise it to prohibit the importation of products that have contributed to the deforestation of the planet.

According to the published preliminary agreement, the list of products that must be accompanied by this new verifiable information are palm oil, cocoa, coffee, rubber, cattle, wood and soybeans, as well as their derivatives, among others, beef, leather or printed paper products, furniture, cosmetics or chocolate. This list will be reviewed in a period of two years to be adapted to new realities that show the data linked to deforestation in the world.

The objective of the initiative, which they defend from Europe, is that European consumers can be sure that with their food or purchases of other products they do not contribute to this phenomenon that, together with carbon emissions, drives climate change. “This is a world first!
