Scotland launches UK’s tallest wind turbine

Scotland’s First Minister has marked the connection of Britain’s tallest offshore wind turbines to the grid. The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has connected what is being described as Britain’s tallest onshore wind turbines to the national grid.

The 200 metres tall structures are part of Banks Renewables’ Kype Muir Wind Farm extension in South Lanarkshire. These turbines have an installed production capacity of up to 67.2 MW of renewable electricity and are forecast to power more than 53,000 households.

The First Minister has said that onshore wind is Scotland’s largest source of renewable energy, making it an important part of their mission to become a net-zero economy by 2045.

The damaging effects of the climate emergency, recently highlighted at COP27, and the sharp rise in energy prices after the war in Ukraine demonstrates the importance of accelerating this transition. The Kype Muir extension is a prominent example of how this is happening and the Scottish Government will soon outline how they plan to increase the country’s capacity to up to 12GW by 2030.
